Indian Maritime University (IMU)
Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University, Providing quality education in the maritime field. It was established by the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. So, 14th November is celebrated as ‘IMU Day’ every year. It has campuses at IMU Chennai, IMU Kolkata, IMU Mumbai, IMU Visakhapatnam and IMU Cochin. Its headquarters is in Chennai and has jurisdiction all over India. The main objective of the Indian Maritime University is to facilitate and promote maritime studies, training; research and extension work with a focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields. The University has 35 affiliated institutes.

- At present Ph.D. Programme is being conducted at IMU Visakhapatnam N Campus.
IMU ADMISSION PROCESS:
All admissions to the various UG and PG programs of the IMU and its Affiliated Institutes will be through All-India Common Entrance Tests (IMU-CET) conducted every year, usually in the month of May/June. For Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS COURSE) it is conducted twice a year (i) May/June. (ii).Dec/Jan.Qualifying in IMU-CET is mandatory for getting admission in IMU Campuses or IMU-affiliated institutes.
There will be a Separate Common Entrance Test (CET) for the MBA programs. Another Common Entrance Test (CET) for the M.Tech programs.
Candidates who are shortlisted based on CET scores will be called for Counselling at designated IMU Campuses and will involve verification of original mark sheets and certificates, physical fitness clearance, and allotment of seats in the IMU Campuses or Affiliated Institutes.
NOTE: Admissions to Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) program in Affiliated Institutes is open only to “sponsored candidates”, (Sponsored candidates are those who has given Sponsorship test conducted by shipping companies/manning companies and got qualified in the test and have the company sponsorship letter).
IMU-CET ONLINE APPLICATION FORM - 2023, IMU-CET APPLICATION FORMS FEE:
The candidates have to apply online for appearing for the Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET 2023)
Application Fee for applying online for CET is Rs.1000 for General candidates and Rs.700 for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates. Application Fee has to be paid online only.
All the CETs are scheduled to be held simultaneously at 34 cities (Test Centres) spread across the country.
About IMU-CET Entrance Exam.
IMU-CET is a Computer based CET exam consisting of 200 Multiple choice type questions. Exam duration is of 3 hours.
IMU-CET Exam pattern/Question paper of UG programme consists of
- English : 40 questions
- General Aptitude : 40 questions
- Mathematics : 50 questions
- Physics : 50 questions
- Chemistry : 20 questions
Note: There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

For Undergraduate Programme:
The Syllabus for CET will be Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, English, General Knowledge and Aptitude at Plus 2 level (CBSE, ICSE and State Boards).
For Postgraduate Programme:
The Syllabus for the CET for MBA and M.TECH.

Candidate should have passed in HSC (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%.
Or
Candidate possessing B.Sc. Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 60% of marks in the final year.
Or
Candidate possessing B.E./B. Tech. Degree from I.I.T or from a college recognized by AICTE

Physical Standards - Medically fit as per the standards set by M. S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.
Eyesight - Candidates have to Qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from color blindness.
B.Sc Nautical Science:

Marine Engineering:
Educational qualifications:
A pass in Plus-two (12th Standard) or its equivalent, with minimum 60% aggregate in Maths, Physics and Chemistry group and at least 50% marks in English in both 10th and 12th Standard.
Age limit:
Maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of commencement of course.
Medical standards:
Should be physically fit for sea and should meet the medical standards laid by the Director General of shipping.
Eyesight/Vision:
Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in another eye for distant unaided vision. Color blindness is not permitted.
B.Sc Maritime Science:
Educational qualifications:

Candidates belonging to General & OBC categories should not be more than 25 years and those belonging to SC & ST categories should not be more than 30 years as on 1st October.

Physical Fitness:
All Candidates who qualify for B.Tech Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering courses will have to submit a Physical Fitness Certificate from Registered Medical Practitioner.
PG Programmes:
MBA Programmes:
- Two-year full-time MBA program in Port & Shipping Management.
- Two-year full-time MBA program in International Transportation & Logistics Management.
For the above two, MBA programs candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 50% marks from Recognized Universities (45% Marks in case of SC/ST).
M.Tech Programmes:
- M.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
- M.Tech in Dredging and Harbour Engineering.
For the admission in above two M.Tech programs Candidate should have Graduate Engineering in Mechanical/Civil/Aeronautical/Marine/Naval Architecture or Equivalent with 60% aggregate.
PGDME :
Degree in Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical & Automation Engineering / Naval Architecture, from a College approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or the I.I.T. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in (Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering) from IMU, are also eligible for admission to this course.

The Indian Maritime University has switched over to Computer-based CETs on the pattern of IIT-JEE from 2023 onwards. The CETs for the August 2023 batch of admissions will also be Computer-based.
The following facilities have been made available:
– Online Registration of Applicants with facility to upload photographs, scanned signatures and SBI challans and to download and print filled-in application in standard formats. For Online Registration, Applicants should visit the website of the Indian Maritime University at http://www.imu.edu.in.
– Facility for Applicants to download their Hall Tickets/Admit Cards with the name of the Test Venue indicated.
– Automated e-mails/SMS to every registered Applicant on successful registration of Application, uploading of Hall Ticket, publication of results, etc.
– Evaluation of answers and publication of CET results within 5 days.
Candidates are requested to visit IMU's website periodically to keep track of new announcements and changes if any. IMU shall not be responsible if any candidate is put to hardship because he did not keep himself abreast of the latest developments.

Work of seafarers on ships can be categorized into 3 basic departments:
1.Deck Officers 2.Engineering Officers 3.Ratings
1.Deck Officers -The officers from this branch primarily look after the ships navigation, loading/unloading of cargo and the general maintenance and administration of the ship. In addition, they also looks after electronic navigation aids such as radar, depth measuring devices, long range navigation equipment and global positioning system etc. The officer joins in the rank of 3rd officer and is subsequently promoted to the rank of 2nd officer, Chief Officer and finally the Master of the ship.

2.Engineering Officers -These are the officer who is qualified in Marine Engineering. They join as 4th Engineer and step by step, get promoted to 3rd, 2nd and Chief Engineer, subject to their passing the competency exams and performance onboard the ship. The Engineering department in addition to looking after the main engines, are also responsible for associated equipment like power generation equipment, cargo pumps and air - conditioning etc.

3.Ratings - There are three kinds of ratings Deck,Engine room and catering.Deck rating is responsible for cargo handling, mooring/ unmooring and general maintenance of the ship. Similarly the engine room ratings assist the engineering officers in maintenance and operation of engines and associated equipment. The catering crew consists of Steward/Cooks and as the name suggests, they look after the catering and the house keeping of officers cabin.

IMU-CET is common entrance exam conducted all over India, for admission into various Marine courses like
